President's Message
Mike Opitz, The Wave car wash

Dear PSCWA Members,

2012 is well underway.  We had an excellent membership meeting on March 6 at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association in Renton.  The meeting was well attended, with thirty-five people- most of them members.   We flew Kyle Doyle, producer of car washTV.com, from New York to talk with us about marketing our washes.  His presentation was extremely helpful with lots of fresh ideas.

[Articles by Kyle Doyle that expand on car wash marketing topics can be found here.]

Those that attended the meeting on March 6 will recall that Kyle was on his way to Holland and Germany to tour car washes.  Watch his web site www.car washtv.com for videos from his trip to Europe.
Your PSCWA leadership came up with seven goals for 2012.  Click here to see goals.

Our number 1 goal is to assist our members in making their car washes more profitable.  To achieve this, we are putting the bulk of our energies into identifying ways to increase revenues, such as through the effective marketing strategies described by Kyle Doyle, and ways to decrease expenses.  During 2012 we hope to work cooperatively with our members to bring all of us good advice and news of superior products through our emails, newsletters, and meetings.

Our number 2 goal is to increase PSCWA membership.  There is strength and financial stability for our association through increased numbers, and during 2012 we hope to grow membership by 10 to 15%.  This year, we’ve been joined by a state-of-the-art car wash in Olympia, Go Green car wash http://www.gogreencw.com/ and by our newest vendor members, Dave English of D-S car wash http://dscweq.com/ and Ted LaVigne of PurClean/PurWater http://www.purclean.com.  Welcome!

The work of the PSCWA continues as usual.  Our outreach to regulators and the environmental community is as robust as ever, and our charity car wash program is helping us educate the public about the advantages of choosing a professional car wash, while helping to keep us financially viable.  But, as I’ve described, our main focus for 2012 is on improving our businesses.

Please share your ideas for better practices and better products.  Refer us to the vendors that make a difference for your company. Suggest a speaker for our fall membership meeting.  Join us in field testing products.

Thank you,

Report Parking Lot Car Washes

In the coming months unregulated car washes will pop up like dandelions in the spring.  Report these washes to the PSCWA office.  The Puget Soundkeeper Alliance has agreed to send out letters explaining to property owners that water from such washes pollute our waterways and offering alternatives for charities- the PSCWA ticket program and car washing kits.  Remember when reporting these incidents to include the business name and address, since the letters will be directed to the business owners versus the charities. Please show your support of the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance. Click here to donate.

Mystery Shopper - Objective Feedback About Your Customer Service

Jim Hanson, owner of the Great Car Wash in Gig Harbor uses a mystery shopping firm monthly to get feedback about the level of customer service at his lube/wash.  Jim’s use of the services of HS Brands Intl. - Service Sleuth is facilitated through the Automotive Oil Change Association (AOCA).  Members can probably arrange to use this service directly from HS Brands Intl. – Service Sleuth, though members of the AOCA may be enjoying a discounted rate.  Through the AOCA, Jim is paying $82 per month, which is $35 for the lube/wash and $47 for the shopping service.  Jim’s been kind enough to allow us to share a recent service evaluation.  To view it, click here.  If you are interested in learning more directly from Jim Hanson, he can be reached at hansonj@comcast.net or by phone at 253-851-9722.
